Evaluations
The first PT visit includes a thorough conversation regarding your needs and goals as well as an exam and measurements (range of motion, strength, flexibility, balance, functional assessment etc), discussion of findings, and beginning treatment(s).
Musculoskeletal Findings
Tissue and joint impairments found on exam may be contributing to functional limitations. For example, your tight hip flexors may be limiting your hip range of motion and making it painful or difficult to walk. These findings can be simple and easy to identify or more subtle and complicated.
Other Findings
The body systems are very complicated and interconnected. Examinations are targeted to the body area in question, however other body areas or systems may be contributing. These will be addressed whenever possible.
Treatments
Musculoskeletal
Musculoskeletal treatments can include training in stretching, strengthening, self management techniques, and manual therapy (massage to a specific area, joint mobilizations, manual stretching or other techniques). Together, we will choose treatments that fit what you need best.
Balance and Gait
In addressing balance and gait impairments we look at the three main balance systems that influence your ability to stay upright: vision, vestibular and proprioception (feeling in skin, joints and muscles). Strength also influences balance.
Specialty
Some areas require testing or treatments that not all PT’s provide. Besides the typical injuries and body areas you may need addressed, I also treat Temperomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMJD). This typically involves a mouth evaluation and treatment to the joints of the jaw in and/or outside of the mouth.
